underserved middle: the people who don’t qualify for subsidized services but cannot afford
private care.
The Community Care Exchange brings caregivers, trained volunteers, community partners,
resources, and education together within one structured network of support.
What Does the Community Care Exchange Actually Do?
Caregivers request support based on the needs of their family. Approved and trained volunteers may provide companionship, caregiver relief, practical assistance, social engagement, wellness visits, transportation accompaniment, and personal care support based on their certification and the needs of the family.
Families may also be connected with trusted resources, educational support, and community partners when their needs extend beyond the services provided directly through the Care Exchange.
The goal is not simply to provide a few hours of respite. It is to create a structured community care network built around training, defined boundaries, relationships, resources, community connection, and reciprocity.
That last paragraph is especially important because it responds directly to the distinction the auditor raised between simple respite and the larger model.
What Volunteers Can Access Through the Academy
The Community Care Exchange Academy is the official volunteer training and certification program of The Anchored in Care Exchange. The Academy was created to prepare volunteers with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills needed to support caregivers, older adults, and individuals with disabilities in a safe, respectful, and compassionate way. This is not simply volunteer orientation. The Academy is where volunteers learn the heart of the mission, understand the standards of service, complete required training, access important resources, and grow into trusted members of The Anchored in Care Exchange community. Every volunteer accepted into the program begins their journey through the Community Care Exchange Academy before being matched with a family. Through structured learning, continuing education, and hands on preparation, volunteers are equipped to serve with care, consistency, and professionalism.
Community Care Exchange Volunteer Handbook
The Volunteer Handbook serves as the primary guide for all volunteers. It explains the mission, values, expectations, volunteer roles, confidentiality requirements, safety procedures, communication standards, boundaries, reporting responsibilities, dress code, conduct expectations, and service guidelines. Volunteers are expected to review the handbook before beginning service.
Volunteer Orientation
Orientation introduces volunteers to The Anchored in Care Exchange, the Community Care Exchange Program, Care Exchange Hours, volunteer pathways, certification requirements, and the overall mission of supporting caregivers and older adults through community based care.
Certification Pathway Information
Volunteers can learn about each certification track, including Certified Community Companion Specialist, Certified Community Personal Care Specialist, and Certified Comprehensive Care Support Specialist. This section explains the differences between each role, required training, scope of service, and advancement opportunities.
CPR and First Aid Certification
The Anchored in Care Exchange covers the cost of CPR and First Aid certification for approved volunteers. This training helps volunteers respond appropriately during emergencies while serving caregivers and older adults.
Background Check and Clearance Information
Because volunteers serve vulnerable adults, background checks and required clearances are part of the approval process. This section explains what screenings are required, why they are important, and how volunteers complete them at no personal cost.
Elder Abuse Recognition and Mandated Reporter Training
Volunteers receive training on recognizing signs of elder abuse, neglect, exploitation, unsafe living conditions, and caregiver distress. This section also explains reporting responsibilities and why protecting vulnerable adults is central to the mission.
Confidentiality and Privacy Training
Volunteers learn how to protect the privacy of caregivers, older adults, and families. This includes guidance on not discussing personal, medical, financial, or household information outside the volunteer role.
Professional Boundaries Training
This section helps volunteers understand appropriate boundaries, including gift policies, communication limits, social media expectations, transportation rules, financial boundaries, and how to maintain respectful relationships with families.
Dementia and Neurological Disorder Awareness
Volunteers receive education on dementia, Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body dementia, Parkinson's disease, stroke related cognitive changes, and other neurological diseases or disorders that may affect memory, behavior, mobility, communication, and daily care needs.
Developmental Disability Awareness
This training helps volunteers better understand how to support individuals with developmental disabilities while respecting dignity, independence, communication differences, and individual needs.
Personal Care Support Training
For volunteers pursuing the Community Personal Care Specialist or Comprehensive Care Support Specialist pathway, this section provides training on assisting with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, continence support, mobility assistance, and respectful personal care.
Safe Transfers and Body Mechanics
Volunteers learn basic principles of safe movement, posture, body mechanics, fall prevention, and transfer support. Training may include use of gait belts when appropriate. The Anchored in Care Exchange provides gait belts for approved volunteers when needed.
Emergency Procedures
This section explains what volunteers should do in case of falls, medical concerns, wandering, safety risks, fire, severe weather, behavioral concerns, or other urgent situations.
Visit Notes and Volunteer Reporting
Volunteers receive guidance on how to document visits, submit volunteer hours, report concerns, communicate with coordinators, and provide updates after assignments.
Care Exchange Hours Tracking
This section explains how Care Exchange Hours are recorded for caregivers participating in the Community Care Exchange Program. It helps ensure the exchange model remains fair, organized, and mission centered.
Continuing Care Education
Learning does not stop after certification. Volunteers will have access to continuing education opportunities, online workshops, guest speaker sessions, refresher trainings, and updated caregiving resources.
Online Workshops and Training Videos
As the Academy grows, volunteers will be able to access online workshops and training videos covering topics such as caregiver burnout, dementia communication, fall prevention, grief, cultural sensitivity, self care, and supporting families with compassion.
Volunteer Resource Library
The Resource Library will include downloadable forms, checklists, safety guides, visit note templates, caregiver communication tools, emergency contact forms, and other materials volunteers may need while serving families.
Leadership Development
Volunteers who complete service hours, demonstrate reliability, and continue their education may become eligible for leadership advancement. Senior and Lead level volunteers may help mentor new volunteers, support orientation, assist with training, and help uphold program standards.
Volunteer Recognition
The Academy will recognize volunteer milestones, completed certifications, service hours, leadership achievements, and outstanding commitment to caregivers and older adults. Volunteers are a vital part of the mission and deserve to be seen, appreciated, and celebrated.
Certification Pathways
The Community Care Exchange Academy offers three volunteer certification pathways.
Certified Community Companion Specialists provide companionship, caregiver relief, wellness visits, meal companionship, social engagement, check in calls, transportation accompaniment, grocery assistance, and other non-medical support.
Certified Community Personal Care Specialists provide companion care plus assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, mobility assistance, and dementia support. This role does not include skilled nursing care or medication administration.
Certified Comprehensive Care Support Specialists are trained and certified in both companion and personal care support. This certification means the volunteer can serve in either role based on experience, training, and the needs of the family.
